Reykjavik Layover Tips

A layover at Keflavik International Airport, a 45-minute drive to Reykjavik, is becoming a more common stop for travelers going from America to Europe. The time at the airport isn’t typically long enough to stay overnight, usually just a few hours. So what can you do during that time? Read on for some tips on how to make the most of your layover at Keflavik International Airport in Iceland.

Relax at the Blue Lagoon

Blue Lagoon is the most popular hot spring in Iceland and for a reason. The crystal-blue waters and silica mud are nice to soak in for a few hours and strip away the fatigue and stress from sitting on a cramped airplane. IcelandAir, and other tour guide companies at the Keflavik, offer frequent coach bus rides to the Blue Lagoon from the airport. The best amount of time to stay at the Blue Lagoon is about 2-3 hours, including the transportation from the airport. Just remember to pack your swimsuit and towel in your carry-on!

Go on a Whale Watching Tour

Keflavik Airport is located on the southwestern Reykjanes Peninsula, which is a great area for whale watching in the Keflavik Harbour – a five-minute drive from the airport. If you’re lucky, you might see minke, humpback, killer and fin whales, and maybe some white beaked dolphins too. Whale watching tours around Keflavik Harbor usually take around three-hours. It is a great way to see Iceland’s gorgeous nature and sea life in a short amount of time.

Reykjavik Walking Tour

The capital of Iceland is the largest city in the country, yet small enough to walk around in a short amount of time. Take a bus to the city center and go on a free or cheap walking tour of the downtown core during your layover. It’ll be just enough time to capture the color and charm of Reykjavik and make you want to come back for a longer trip. You’ll most likely visit the Harpa Concert Hall, the government buildings, Tjornin Lake and Hallgrimskirkja Church.

Extra Tip!

If you do want to stay longer than a few hours on your layover, you are allowed to! On IcelandAir, you can request at Keflavik Airport at the start of your layover to lengthen it up to 7 days for no extra charge. If you have a few more days of vacation time on the way back home, make the most of this free offer!
