Cherry Blossom Season at the University of Washington

It’s taken me a long time to realize this, but I am blessed to have grown up in the Seattle area, where nature plays a big role in city skyline and gives us something to look forward to after the cloudy days of winter. As a UW student, cherry blossom season at The Quad excites me more than anything! I often end up spending most of my time in class staring outside instead of listening to my teachers.

The Yoshino cherry blossom trees at The Quad are coming near to the end of their lifespan. The school has already removed the cherry blossom trees near Drumheller Fountain because they were infected with a fungal infection and were decaying. How is the UW going to replace the cherry blossom trees in a timely manner without losing them as a big tourist attraction? It would be a shame to go to The Quad one year expecting to see the gorgeous trees and just see a bunch of small saplings instead. That sounds exciting.

I wanted to make the most of the cherry blossoms this year by having some pictures taken around them. My brilliant friend Muqu, of Massan Photography, was kind enough to take some photos of Jace and I to celebrate our one year anniversary and I love how they turned out! The cherry blossoms made for a beautiful background for such weird looking people! Don’t you wish you could have a professional photographer follow you around daily to take pictures of your life? I can just imagine how awesome my Instagram account would be!

Some people have asked why Jace and I decided to get photos taken of us for our one year anniversary. I don’t necessarily think that getting professional photos should be limited to any “official” occassions to celebrate. An anniversary is an important milestone for me and I am happy, and lucky, to have reached it. There can never be such a thing as too many well-done photos around the house either, can there? Perhaps, I like looking at photos of myself too. Don’t hate, girlfriend!

With the cherry blossoms still in bloom, I smile every time I see them. They remind me of the fun photo shoot we had that day with Muqu. I’m really looking forward to the next photo shoot we have planned!

Cherry blossom season at UW usually lasts from early March to late April. The Yoshino trees at The Quad normally come in around at the end of March and last for about two weeks. However, other cherry blossom breeds at UW come in before and after, so you won’t miss too much if you don’t get to see the blossoms at The Quad. The bloom times depends on the weather. To get updates on when the UW cherry blossoms are in full bloom, check out UW’s site on the cherry blossoms and follow their twitter handle, @uwcherryblossom!
